First off, thank you for checking out my story. You could be anywhere else on the internet, and I am grateful to you for being here.
Ms.Communication is an adventure mini-series shot and hosted by me, Brittany Washington.
Filming began in Bali, Indonesia, in August of 2020, six months into the global pandemic. During the shutdown in March, my thoughts were initially to "wait it out" to continue to Japan and proceed with my ten-country trip. After six months, reality set in that I was not getting to Japan anytime soon. There was no apartment or job back home.
So I focused on the only thing I could — what was right in front of me. Bali took many covid precautions over the year, but I was still able to try new skills alone as a class of one. A few months into my Muay Thai practice, drumming, and painting lessons in the central area of Ubud, I decided to learn as much as I could, deliberately choosing physical challenges.
Movement is essential to me. This experience has changed my mind's relationship with my body. I have always been "athletic leaning" but never really integrated it fully as a part of my lifestyle. Running a few miles a week after sitting in an office or elsewhere for 16 hours a day did not cut it. So embracing the dormant part of me that was ready to move was the opportunity that presented itself, and from there, I learned so much more.
In a world that was uncertain, scary, and heartbreaking the ENTIRE TIME, learning kept me grounded and steady.
Professionally I have been a producer/video journalist for the last decade. So naturally, I documented my trips when I left New York in January of 2020. It was second nature to capture my activities. As time passed, however, it not only became a passion but something to focus on over the year. Honestly, it kept me going, emotionally, mentally, and literally. I am grateful for that.
I hope this serves as a small reminder that all is not lost, and we all are deserving of joyful adventures. Hopefully soon. I share my lessons with that intention in mind.
THANK YOU all!
I want to again thank all my teachers for this series. These lessons are priceless to me. All of my greatest lessons were not in front of a lens.
To the Balinese community, my friends on the island, and Indonesia, thank you for allowing me to stay, learn and grow with you.
To Sherif, I could not have done this without your support. Thank you.
To my teacher Teja, thank you teaching breathe, trust, and me to heal myself.
To Komang, thank you for teaching me the drums and patience.
To my Muay Thai instructors Occu and Edsar, thank you for the training, the discipline and the laughs.
To Soosan, my painting teacher, thank you for teaching me to trust my creative instinct.
To my sister Megan, thank you for your love, support, and sisterhood.
And a heartfelt thank you to my production team Marga, Max Kruemcke and the entire Ubud Creative House team for bringing Ms.Communication to life.
