Episode two: Survival training

None of the lessons I experienced were more important or challenging than learning basic survival skills. It's something I have wanted to do for a very long time. Being able to navigate unknown terrain or emergencies with some knowledge of the necessary skills that will keep you alive is vital.

This particular class was not one readily available here in Bali. I researched and found Survival Skills Indonesia based out of Jakarta. They agreed to teach me basic skills like navigation, emergency first response, finding water and food, fire starting, signaling, orientation, shelter and camp building, and tools to combat some of the mental challenges with techniques to survive psychologically. My instructor, Coach Mike, and his team trained me for over a week, with my final test being to spend 24 hours in the wilderness alone and navigate myself back to base.

This experience shifted something in me. Deeply. I guess 24 hours alone in the darkest jungle you can imagine will do that to you. Even in a mock scenario, the fear was intense, and the will to survive was not readily present when I began. These lessons are priceless to me, and I will continue my survival training moving forward for sure.

Thank you, Coach Mike, “Captain Dan,” and “Mike Jones” for the life-saving lesson.
