Episode six: Van Life!

My last lesson came to me by complete accident!

I feel like everyone thought about living out of a van and saying f%$k it to the rest of the world at least once over the last year. I know I did! To pack it all up and keep it moving. There is something really alluring about the idea of downsizing to the point of ultimate mobility, when it’s a choice and not your only option, of course.

Most of my life here in Bali, and my lessons took place in Ubud. I visited most of the southern part of the island, but I hadn’t seen much else! So I thought the most efficient way to do so was a ROAD TRIP! I wasn’t planning on learning a new skill this round per se, rather just enjoying the trip, going on a few little adventures, and mentally process all that I have done so far.

But Bali had other plans for me. Puku Camper, the camper van rental company, only had MANUAL TRANSMISSION. Learning to drive manual on the left side of the road in a van on some of the tiniest streets you could imagine was wild. The trip quickly shaped up to be another lesson before me. The key take away — don’t sleep on first and second gear! They can get you out of a literal jam.
